Design: Heavier Than It Looks

I’ve reviewed several Ugreen products over the last year or so, and this new Ugreen 20,000mAh power bank (model PB720) sticks to the same general design as many of its fast-charging siblings. A matte gray casing takes up the top and sides of the charger, with matte black on the bottom and where the USB ports are located. From left to right, these three connections include a 30W USB-C port, a 22.5W USB-A, and a 100W USB-C.

This same black trim wraps around to the LED portion of the charger, where you’ll also find the device’s power button. Ugreen wants you to know that this single button is for more than just power (this phrase is etched beside it). When there’s no device connected, a single button tap brings up the LED display, which shows how much battery life is remaining. If you do nothing for a few seconds, the display will time out.

When you connect a device to one of the three USB ports, the LED display kicks on, indicating that a charge cycle has begun. While charging, the display doesn’t actually turn off. The only way to disable the battery readout is to turn off the entire charger (two short button presses). I wish that Ugreen had incorporated a simple display-off function. Believe it or not, those little LED numbers can light up a room at night.

I also thought the power bank was a little heavy. The actual weight is less than a pound (0.93 pounds to be exact), but I guess I was expecting a lighter feel based on the power bank’s compact size.

Charging: Quite Capable

Like other power banks, the PB720 will output different amounts of wattage based on how many devices are connected to the charger. With all three ports in use, the 100W USB-C falls to 65W, while the second USB-C and USB-A ports drop-down to 20W each.

With both USB-C ports in use, the 100W port drops down to 65W, while the second port drops to 30W. Using the 100W USB-C with the USB-A brings the former down to 65W and the latter to 22.5W. If you opt for the lower wattage USB-C and USB-A ports, both ports top out at 20W.

I liked that Ugreen thought to include passthrough charging, which lets you charge the unit (using the 100W USB-C port) while charging two devices simultaneously. The power bank can receive up to 65W, although you’ll need to use a wall charger that can dish out that kind of power.

I also enjoyed using the Ugreen 20,000mAh power bank's handy low-current mode for charging my AirPods. You can activate or deactivate this feature by pressing and holding the power button for three seconds. You can confirm you’re in low-current mode by looking at the battery readout. If low-current mode is active, the second number should turn into a single rotating LED line.

Using the Ugreen PB720: Operates Like a Champ

Over several days I tested the power bank, I mainly used the power bank to top off my late 2020 MacBook Pro, my iPhone 12, and my AirPods Pro 2, both individually and in groups of two or three devices.

One of my biggest takeaways from this experience was just how effective the device was at hanging onto wattage. This was especially apparent when charging my iPhone. In one instance, I plugged my phone into the 100W USB-C (which defaults to 65W when you’re not charging a laptop) at 6:03, with 26 percent battery remaining on my iPhone and 90 percent battery on the PB720. At 7:16, my iPhone was up to 90 percent, while the PB720 had only dropped to 76 percent.

When charging my MacBook, I used the 100W USB-C and Ugreen’s provided double-ended USB-C connection. The company claims you should be able to charge a dead MacBook Air to 55 percent capacity in 30 minutes, and while I don’t own an Air model, I can attest to peppy results with my MacBook Pro. During one test, I plugged my laptop into the 100W port with 22 percent battery remaining, and just half an hour later, the computer was at 70 percent.

Like other Ugreen products, I appreciated the inclusion of a few failsafe features for the PB720, including over-charge protection, high-temperature protection, and short-circuit protection, among other defenses. I always get a little worried when power banks start running warm, which happened with the Ugreen 20,000mAh power bank when I was charging my phone, laptop, and AirPods all at once. I was reassured though by the device’s high-temp cutoff, which never ended up shutting down the power bank.

Should You Buy the Ugreen 20,000mAh Two-Way Fast Charging Power Bank?

I think the Ugreen 20,000mAh Two-Way Fast Charging Power Bank is one of the best products Ugreen has ever made.

The power bank delivers fast charging to compatible laptops and mobile devices, is small enough to take just about anywhere, and I can’t tell you how nice it was to have an actual battery-remaining readout, instead of the typical LED status dots that have you guessing at what percentile remains (although I wish you could shut the display off without disabling the charger).
